The BSFA e-Newsletter

BSFA members can now get a little something extra from us – an e-newsletter!

This is a monthly mailshot that depending on what we have for you will be packed full of news, useful information, extra articles, e-publications and the odd competition or giveaway, exclusive to BSFA members.

We have already sent out a Christmassy mail to anyone on our database, and the few members who sent us their email addresses after this was mentioned on the Facebook Group. If you didn’t get an email from us, then we don’t have the right email for you. This is easy to rectify – just send us your name and email address to

The January newsletter will be sent out early, ahead of our BSFA Award nominations deadline (sent in yours yet?). Included in the e-mailing will be a downloadable copy of the latest Focus magazine*. We are aware that some of the pages printed out in the wrong colour, with a dark, splodgy background that made a couple of the articles very difficult to read – we are very sorry about this, something seems to have gone awry between our proofs and the mailing. However, we can assure you that these issues are not apparent in the PDF. So, get in touch, and we’ll send you a copy.

*Some of you may observe that the promise of a legible copy of our brilliant writing magazine, Focus, is a sweet way of getting you to send us your emails and therefore lure you into our database clutches – mwa ha ha. And you’d be right… but we don’t like to be bothersome, so just let us know if you don’t want our e-newsletter and we won’t send it to you. Or sign up for now and unsubscribe whenever. You shouldn’t want to, though, it’s pretty good.

About Donna Scott

Chair of the BSFA since June 2013. Prior to this I was Awards Administrator, taking over that role from Claire Briarley in 2008. I am officially Donna Bond since getting married in May 2013, but continue to write and perform under my previous name, Donna Scott. My short fiction stories have been published in various anthologies and magazines, and I was winner of the inaugural Short Cuts at the MAC in 2005. As a comedian, I have performed all over the UK. Comedy has also given me the opportunity to perform alongside big names like Sarah Millican and Jasper Carrott! As a poet, I've also performed all over the place, including lots of science fiction conventions, and sometimes my poetry and comedy get kind of mixed up. I was the first official Bard of Northampton, it's true. I've got a tankard that says so... I love being a part of the BSFA - I've always been a devourer of books and being part of this association has enabled me to explore some great science fiction classics - and classics of the future, that I might otherwise have not heard about. I've met some lovely people with an enthusiasm for the genre, made firm friends, and got to meet some of my favourite writers, too! As a writer, I also have to say that FOCUS is the best magazine for writers I've ever come across - and as a member I get that for free. Who wouldn't want to be a part of this?
