BSFA Shortlist Announced

The British Science Fiction Association is extremely pleased and proud to announce the shortlist for the 2012 BSFA Awards.

This shortlist has been drawn up from the most popular titles nominated by members of the BSFA, who will now have the opportunity todecide the winners in each category, voting along with attendees of the long-established science fiction convention, Eastercon, which this year takes place in Bradford from 29th March to 1st April.

Donna Scott, the Awards Administrator for the BSFA said, “It’s been quite exciting watching the final nominations come in. It was right down to the wire in some cases, and if this were a race that bookies were taking bets on, they’d have lost money on a few favourites, I’m sure.

“What I found really lovely, though, was reading some of the comments that came through with quite a lot of the nominations. It wasn’t obligatory, but so many fans were tremendously keen to tell the world about that great book they’d discovered last year.

“The BSFA and its awards have been going since 1958, but what I think these shortlists prove is that there is still an immense enthusiasm out there for stories which deal with the discovery of new worlds, new technologies, and different ways of being, and for books which aren’t afraid to tackle sociopolitical questions about us, here and now, within this liberating genre.”

The winners will be announced at EightSquared, the 2013 Eastercon, Cedar Court Hotel, Bradford this Easter, in a ceremony hosted by London Falling novelist, Paul Cornell.

The shortlisted nominees are:

Final Day for BSFA Award Nominations

The list of nominations is growing and growing... you are finding so many books, stories and works of non-fiction to nominate. In this latest update there are no additions to the Best Artwork category, though, so more nominations in this category would be particularly appreciated - even if it's just for something already on the list.

Members have until midnight to get their nominations in and can find all the rules and regulations of what to do here.

Rather unfortunately, we seem to be having difficulty with our nomination form today. However, I will take the time to check back every nomination received to make sure I have noted everything you wish to nominate. If you prefer you can just email awards@bsfa.co.uk

2011 BSFA Awards Winners

Congratulations to all those who won the BSFA Awards for work produced in 2011!

  • Best Non-Fiction: The SF Encyclopedia, third edition (beta), edited by John Clute, Peter Nicholls, David Langford and Graham Sleight.
  • Best Artwork: Cover of Ian Whates’s The Noise Revealed by Dominic Harman (Solaris)
  • Best Short Fiction: “The Copenhagen Interpretation” by Paul Cornell (Asimov’s, July)
  • Best Novel published in Britain: The Islanders by Christopher Priest (Gollancz)

At Eastercon, as well as at four other conventions held that same weekend, the Hugo shortlists were announced. The BSFA Award winners for best non-fiction and best short fiction both made that ballot, so their fans will have another opportunity to vote for them, should they wish!

Gollancz did extremely well this year, since they host/publish The SF Encyclopedia as well as The Islanders.

P.S. Please see the BSFA's apology for the way the awards ceremony worked out.

And lastly, this information has appeared to be sadly missing from this site since the awards were announced. It was in fact here, but only visible from certain pages. Our apologies for that.

BSFA Awards Shortlist Announced

The British Science Fiction Association is delighted to announce the shortlists for the 2011 BSFA Awards. The 2011 awards will be held at Olympus 2012, The 2012 Eastercon, which takes place from 6th – 9th April 2012 at the Radisson Edwardian Hotel, Heathrow, London, and will be presented by acclaimed author, John Meaney.

The winner in each of the categories will be presented with a specially commissioned artwork created by Northampton Skulls and Robots artists, Dan Brodie and Lauren Hubbard.

But first, we have to pick the winners.

Members of the BSFA and Eastercon will now have the opportunity to vote on the shortlists.

Advance voting forms will be posted out to BSFA members, who will have until 2nd April 2012 to get their nominations in. They can do that by post, email or online form, ranking each of the nominees according to their personal preference: 1 for favourite, 2 for second favourite etc. They don’t have to rank all nominees and they don’t have to vote in every category. We’ll post on here when the form is available. After 2nd April, the only way to get your voice heard will be to attend the Eastercon and grab a ballot form from your pack or the BSFA desk. Deadline for voting at Eastercon will be 12 noon on the day of the ceremony, the date of which will be confirmed shortly.

As ever, the nominations and questions we have received have shown us that the passion people have for Science Fiction in Britain goes from strength to strength. But how people access their science fiction is evolving… and so we have had some very diverse nominations on the list, from filmed installations and exhibitions to podcasts and pocket books. This year, e-books were a bone of contention, as some members questioned whether we could apply a country of origin to a digital format when considering eligibility for the novel category (which specifies that books must be published in the UK).

This was not our only problematic consideration. What of those works produced in multi-media format? Should they be separated out? Should the nominations be thrown in together?

This year a number of members nominated the British Library’s Out of This World exhibition for the Non-Fiction Award. The Committee has decided that this does not meet the eligibility criteria for the award. However, in recognition of the support it has received and its success in encouraging people to explore and enjoy science fiction (one of the primary purposes of the BSFA Awards) will be giving it the status of Specially Commended. In addition, the accompanying book by Mike Ashley made the shortlist and can still be voted on, along with the other nominees. And the nominees are:
