Novels published in 1958
This page provides a list of some SF&F novels published in 1958 which we therefore consider to be eligible for the BSFA’s fifieth anniversary award. It’s probably not a comprehensive list, so don’t be put off nominating any other genre novels first published in 1958 that you know and like.
As explained on the eligibility page, serialised novels are eligible for this award provided that the concluding part was published in 1958. The list therefore includes both novels published or serialised in magazines and novels published in book form in 1958 (provided the same text hadn’t previously been published elsewhere). Given the SF market at the time, books and magazines published anywhere in the world are included.
We’ve accepted the contemporary definition of ‘novel’ for these works, even though a few of them would be likely to be considered novellas in today’s word count definitions. Works described in magazines as ‘short novels’ aren’t included here since they’re not comparable in length even to the shorter ‘novels’ of the period.
